Dataset – Biodiversity Action Plans

Description

National Biodiversity Action plans provide an insight into national biodiversity priorities and actions set against the ecosystems, habitats and species represented in that country. They are prepared according to a set of guidelines established by the Convention on Biological Diversity, a convention which encourages all signatories to prepare such plans. Article 6 of the Convention on Biological Diversity on ‘General Measures for Conservation and Sustainable Use’ states that each Contracting Party shall:

Develop national strategies, plans or programmes for the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity or adapt for this purpose existing strategies, plans or programmes which shall reflect, inter alia, the measures set out in this Convention relevant to the Contracting Party concerned

Integrate, as far as possible and as appropriate, the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity into relevant sectoral or cross-sectoral plans, programmes and policies.

Although encouraged to follow a common plan, and address common themes, there are variations in detail between national plans. The National Biodiversity Action plan documents presented here are taken directly, and with content unmodified, from the CBD website. They have been renamed to reflect content, and are presented in a format to allow searching against a list of over 40 subject themes. This reformatting has been undertaken by the UK Joint Nature Conservation Committee Support Unit. Currently only four national plans are incorporated into the site (Indonesia, Russia, Mexico, South Africa). Subject to the consent of the CBD Secretariat coverage will be progressively extended to other countries.
