Background

Economic sectors

The UK Department for International Development has funded research (undertaken by consultants Scott Wilson) which includes an analysis of the impacts of a shortlist of UK economic sectors on international biodiversity. For background material on this analysis see:

This work focuses on impacts on biodiversity in the developing world. Potential impacts arising through the five direct drivers of biodiversity loss (habitat change, over-exploitation, invasive species, pollution, anthropogenic change) were emphasised in order to identify potentially significant impacts as well as opportunities for the UK Government to act.

A range of spatial and geographical factors were also taken into account, including consideration of areas of biodiversity value where impacts on biodiversity might be disproportionately significant. Some current initiatives which could provide the UK Government with a platform or entry point for future or enhanced action (e.g. in the case of Food supply, the Round Table on Sustainable Palm Oil and the Marine Stewardship Council) are highlighted in these reports.

The sector classification employed is that used by UK Trade & Investment with four sectors reported on:

Note that these sectors are broad in their scope and encompass several ‘subsectors’. For example, energy encompasses oil and gas, nuclear power and ‘renewables’.
